The Eli Bridge Company started building Ferris wheels in 1900, when W. E. Sullivan and James H. Clements created their first "Big Eli" wheel. Starting out in Roodhouse, Ill., they debuted the ride at Central Park in Jacksonville, Ill., where their company has operated since 1919. When they moved to Jacksonville, they created a factory that included rooms that were tall enough that allowed for building some of the largest Ferris wheels at the time.[1]
